This page collects information on some common plants grown in the garden. Because summers in Finland vary greatly in length and warmth, the timings are only rough estimates, and you should keep an eye on weather forecasts. If you want to add information to the list, please contact the association’s board.

Tips for specific plants
Plant | Tips |
---|---|
Beans | Should be picked when they’re still green, without brown spots and before turning brown. |
Cantaloupe | Use gauze to keep the plant constantly above +20C temperature to get fruit. Must sometimes be pollinated by hand. Keep the fruit away from ground to prevent it from going bad. |
Chili | Prone to pests. |
Corn | Wrap the seeds in wet paper overnight before sowing. Pluck the corns when the tips are round. |
Gabbage | Prone to pests. Can be used to keep pests away from other plants. |
Horse bean | Requires well-turned ground to avoid pests. Pick while still green, same with regular beans. |
Leek | If you cut them while they’re growing they grow more leek. |
Onion | Can be lifted when the green parts start falling. |
Pea | Wrap the seeds in wet paper overnight before sowing. Requires well-turned ground to avoid pests. |
Potato | Prone to diseases, especially if grown multiple years in row in same soil. Can be eaten even if the leaves show marks of disease. Throw diseased potato parts to trash, not compost, because otherwise the disease spreads with wind and soil. |
Pumpkin | Requires a lot of fertilizing. Preferably grown on top of a compost. |
Radish | Should take 30-40 days from sowing to harves. If it grows only leaves, the soil may be over-fertilized. |
Tomato | Can be picked even when green, but get sweeter if they get more sun. Green tomatoes can be turned green by putting them in a pot without light. |
Watermelon | Use gauze to keep the plant constantly above +20C temperature to get fruit. Must sometimes be pollinated by hand. Keep the fruit away from ground to prevent it from going bad. |
